  • Consumers have indicated that they are willing to change their eating habits for environmental reasons, but they face a lack of information and have difficultly identifying the sustainable option. In pursuit of its mission to inspire and empower people to make healthier and more sustainable food and lifestyle choices, EUFIC has developed an interactive map of Europe helping consumers to know which fruit and vegetables are local and in season.

With its appealing and simple interface, the tool combines data from 24 countries, features over 200 fruits and vegetables, and allows users to filter by country, season, and month. The innovative tool does not only provide reliable information on local and seasonal produce, it may also serve as a guide to vary fruit and vegetables across the year and inspire people try new recipes with sustainable alternatives. The tool is accompanied by the article ‘Are seasonal fruit and vegetables better for the environment?’ to provide some background information on the topic.

The timing of the launch of the map is not a coincidence as 2021 is the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables, as proclaimed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The tool is currently available in English, but will be complemented with French, German, Italian and Spanish.
