SUCCESS FOR EIN’S GYERE COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAM IN HUNGARY
EIN’s Hungarian CBP member, GYERE, has carried out a successful campaign to reduce obesity among children. In 2014, in Dunaharaszti Hungary, a considerable proportion of children (26.5%) was obese or overweight. 9% of the sample was undernourished. Prevalence of obesity and overweight was the highest among 10y girls (30.6% respectively) and also significant among 12y boys (26.8%).

Gyere undertook a healthy diet campaign and divided it into 8 messages, which were sent to children and their parents over a three-year time period. In the first year Gyere created the first 3 themes (vegetables and fruits; the importance of cereals; fluid consumption), in the second year the target was on the next 2 themes (meat, meat products, fish; milk, dairy products, eggs), and in the third year the program addressed the last 3 themes (sweets and desserts; fats, oils, salt; principles of healthy nutrition).

The results demonstrate that there is significant difference in the distribution comparing the full sample of the two years. Mean BMI of the total sample from 2014 is significantly higher than the mean BMI in 2017 (p=0,000). Mean BMI of 8-10y boys, 7-8y girls and 11-12y girls is significantly lower in 2017 vs. 2014 (p=0,000). Prevalence of overweight has decreased by 5% and obesity by 2% between 2014 and 2017. So the ratio of overweight 6-12 year old children decreased in Dunaharaszti during the GYERE® Program, which means that the program was effective and successful!

EPODE ACADEMY (EPAC)
A NEW LEARNING CENTER FOR
THE BENEFIT OF EIN MEMBERS
-
To help our CBP programs to improve knowledge and skills for the prevention of obesity in children and their families, the EPODE International Network (EIN) is creating and developing a new learning center, called EPODE Academy (EPAC). EPODE Academy (EPAC) will be a resource for EIN member programs and will serve as a robust training hub for managers of existing community-based programs wishing to upgrade their skills. To be able to cater to the needs of EIN members in the best way possible, a survey was sent out earlier this year to all EIN members to find out what kind of training they would like to receive.

The Survey showed that there is a need for training among EIN member and the support for the new training programs is significant. The current training offered by EIN is definitely appreciated and members expect a lot from an EPODE Academy. However, not all the members have a budget available for training and are willing to pay for the services of such EPODE Academy. This financial aspect will require our attention. EIN aims to develop the EPODE Academy in a sustainable way in order to keep the costs low and the quality high – at the high level of what has been offered up to now. So, our members clearly feel that we should go ahead with the development of the Epode Academy!

EIN HAS PARTNERED WITH 13 PAN-EU
ORGANISATIONS TO SUBMIT A NEW
APPLICATON FOR EU FUNDING: OBEAT
-
EIN, together with a consortium of 13 partners from across Europe, including the universities of Copenhagen, Durham, Windesheim, VU Amsterdam Free, Navarra, Maastricht, Rotterdam, Leeds, James Hutton Institute and EASO, has submitted a new application for European funding through a H2020 call for projects titled ‘How to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic’ with a project proposal called Obesity Beating by EPODE All Together (OBEAT).

The OBEAT project will develop, demonstrate and disseminate novel cost-effective approaches to the prevention of unhealthy weight gain early in life. The scientific evidence generated in OBEAT will be translated into tools, techniques and resources for community-based programs for obesity prevention. Thus, the interventions tested in three randomized controlled-trials will be piloted in seven of EIN’s real world CBP communities (Austria SALTO, Belgium VIASANO, Bulgaria BASORD, Italy EUROBIS, Malta A HEALTHY WEIGHT FOR LIFE, Portugal MUN-SI and Romania SETS) to learn how well it translates into European-wide implementation. These pilots will then be implemented in real world settings at large scale, using our international community-based childhood obesity prevention platform, the EPODE International Network (EIN), with a current reach of 20 million Europeans and over 70 million people globally.

EIN PARTICIPATED IN ISCA’S MOVE CONGRESS
AND ACTIVEVOICE WORKSHOP IN BIRMINGHAM
-
EIN, represented by Executive Director Pauline Harper, joined the ‘creative conversation’ on the WHO’s Global Action Plan on Physical Activity at the MOVE Congress 2017(4-7 Oct 2017 in Birmingham, UK) with ISCA (International Sport and Culture Association). The MOVE Congress was dedicated to sport and physical activity and hosted 250 delegates from around the world representing a variety of sectors that share a common aim: to engage in partnerships and cross-sector collaborations that motivate more people to be physically active.

The topic of ‘creative conservation’ session was ‘Together we can achieve almost anything!’ with a focus on WHO’s Global Action Plan on Physical Activity. The discussion touched upon the following questions:

• How the WHO Global Action Plan on Physical Activity ‘WHOGAP’ can be used in different sectors ?
• How can it be disseminated to the right users ?
• What is its future in Europe and other continents ?
• How we can use it for the networking and international/national development and for empowering cross-sectoral partnership and cooperation, etc?
